Herm's Inn: Logan

My favorite meal of the day: Breakfast.
Hands down. I love breakfast. I would not hate it if every meal consisted of breakfast food. I always wonder why people order skillets and omelets for breakfast because french toast, crepes, waffles, and pancakes just make everyone's day so much better. Breakfast food is so cozy. I love it.

French Toast is by far my favorite breakfast food. It is hard for me to branch out. However, whether you used to like French Toast or not, your new favorite is found at {Kneaders}. Plus, it is only $4.99 and it is all-you-can-eat.

All-you-can-eat + French Toast = a deadly combination.
Here is a look at their Cinnamon French Toast. It is thick cut, soft, with cinnamon bits inside. Topped with freshly made whipped cream and strawberries, the French Toast is accompanied by a unique caramel syrup that is to die for:

Remember, it is all-you-can-eat, so come with an appetite and baggy clothes.

My second favorite breakfast place is The Crepery. I love The Crepery because of its atmosphere. It has a cute, cozy, cafe feel to it. With local art along the walls, the small house is a perfect place to go in the morning. However, it has moved locations. The Crepery used to be located on 130 North and 100 East behind the Tabernacle and across from Le Nonne. Now, it is located on Main Street and about 500 South. It is right next to the Antique shop on the east side of Main Street.

The only downfall of The Crepery is that you do not get a lot of food. The crepes are pretty small. They are amazing, but they are small. Therefore, I like to go to the Crepery for dessert or for a snack. They have all kinds of crepes, including sweet crepes with fruit, Nutella, graham crackers, marshmallow, whipped cream, you name it. They also have crepes with chicken, spinach, cheese, and veggies, if that is your style. Their new location supposedly has a patio in the back where customers can enjoy their crepe while relaxing next to the Logan River.

I love The Crepery. It is one-of-a-kind. It is exactly the reason I started blogging. I love small, unique restaurants, just like The Crepery. I recommend you go there at least once just for the vibe. It'll brighten your day. It will make you love Logan just a little bit more. I will do a blog post for The Crepery soon, I just wanted to give it a shout out. Here is a pic of their crepes:

Here is The Crepery's blog if you would like to take a look.

Ok, now onto the best sit down breakfast place in Logan. Herm's Inn. I have been meaning to blog about Herm's Inn for almost a year, but every time I go there, I always forget to take pictures. So, last week, my Dad came up to visit and he reminded me to take some photos before I stuffed my face.

What is my favorite meal at Herm's Inn, you ask? Of course, French Toast. Their French Toast is marinated overnight so when they cook it in the morning, the bread caramelizes. Oh man it is so good. Not as good as Kneaders, but still the best item on the menu. It is different than any other French Toast I have ever had. You really don't even need syrup because it is so sweet.

So, what is my second favorite meal at Herm's? The Florentine Eggs Benedict. Unfortunately, I ordered it one of the occasions I forgot to take a picture, so I apologize. I have tried all of the Eggs Benedict items on the menu and this is my favorite. It is an English muffin with poached eggs, spinach, mushroom, onion, and Hollandaise sauce. Their Hollandaise sauce is so good. The waitress even said they get compliments for it every day. The Florentine is $8.95 and is served with potatoes.

Here is what my Dad and I ordered recently:

Macho Benny {9.25}:
(you have to say it with a scrunched face and deep voice)
Corn Tortilla, Poached egg, Chorizo, Black Beans, Avocado, and Chile Verde

I ordered the Macho Benny because I was craving black beans. Funny, I don't even like beans. It was weird. This dish was very Mexican. It did not taste like breakfast to me. It was hard for me to taste the egg with the chorizo that was put on top. The salsa was ordinary, the beans were beans, and the dish as a whole was bland. It was still good, but I would probably never order it again. If you are a fan of corn tortillas and non-spicy Mexican, you may enjoy this dish, but there is better.

 Traditional Eggs Benedict {$8.95}:
English Muffin, Poached Eggs, Canadian Bacon, Tomato, and Hollandaise Sauce

In my opinion, going with the old-school Eggs Benedict was a lot better than the (last time, you gotta do it) Macho Benny. In this dish, I could taste the individual flavor of the english muffin, canadian bacon, and eggs. Not one flavor was overpowering. The Canadian bacon was thick-cut and the egg was cooked perfectly. When you cut into with your fork it didn't break the yolk, but at the same time it wasn't dry.  It all fit together nicely with different textures to each ingredient.

The potatoes weren't my favorite. I wish they weren't cut so small. I like thick potatoes.

So when it comes to Eggs Benedict
1. The Florentine
2. The Traditional
3. Macho Benny

The waitress also noted that the Veggie Omelette and the Fiesta Omelette are very popular. The Veggie Omelette has avocado, spinach, mushroom, tomato, and cheddar. The Fiesta Omelette has chorizo, monterey jack cheese, and onions. Both of those items are $8.95.

Herm's Inn is located in the island. It is in the middle of a neighborhood. It used to be an old gas station turned restaurant. There is some history to it, check out their website below the picture for details. There is not a lot of parking, but you can park on the street if there is no room in the lot.

Pumpkin Better Than Sex Cake

Since it is now October and fall is in full swing, I have the perfect recipe for a cold day when all you want to do is cuddle up in a blanket and... eat. It's so funny to me that right when October hits, all of the sudden I crave pumpkin. I add pumpkin to everything. Most of the time it turns out tasting like baby food, but sometimes I come up with something genius. I cannot take credit for this cake, though. I wish I would have invented it, but the people on Pinterest got there before me.

So here it is: Pumpkin Better than Sex Cake! It is super easy and absolutely deadly.

Pumpkin Better Than Sex Cake

Ingredients:
1 Box Yellow Cake Mix
1 Small Can Pumpkin Puree
1 - 14 oz. Can Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 - 8 oz. Tub Cool Whip
1/2 bag Heath Bits
Caramel Sundae Sauce

Obviously, it's super healthy

Directions:
1. In a large bowl, mix together cake mix and pumpkin puree until a smooth batter forms. I actually added all the ingredients to make the yellow cake mix (1 egg, 1/4 cup oil, 1/2 cup water), but the original recipe calls just for the cake mix and the pumpkin. Extra ingredients or not, mix the cake mix and pumpkin together until a smooth batter forms.
2. Pour batter into a well greased 9x13 cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees according to the directions on the cake mix box.
3. Let cool for about 10 minutes after baking. Using the bottom of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the top of the cake.
4. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the cake, filling the holes. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
5. Spread the cool whip over the top of the cake. Sprinkle on heath bits and drizzle caramel over the top.
6. Refrigerate for a few hours or overnight for best results. However, you probably won't make it that long.

Jack's Wood Fired Oven: UPDATE

Good News!!

Jack's Wood Fired Oven is not closing anymore!

The owner has decided to expand instead of closing down. The location will be the same, the restaurant will just be a little bigger. So don't worry, the best pizza in Logan is not going anywhere!

If you haven't read my original post about Jack's, go to the Restaurant section on the left side of my blog. Then, click on Logan and scroll down. Enjoy!

Jack's Wood Fired PIzza Closing!

This is so sad!

Jack's Wood Fire Oven-the best pizza in Logan- is closing down on October 13. The owner is moving to Wyoming to pursue another job in the food service business.

So go get his pizza while you have the chance! I promise you are missing out if you haven't tried it! And don't forget their dessert pizza!

I posted about it back in July, if you would like to look at my post, it is under the July tab on the left.

Bruges Waffles and Frites: Salt Lake City

The Best Date Night Food

I have the best place for you to eat. I am not exaggerating. This is probably my favorite food of all time, especially in Utah.

The place is called Bruges. It is located in downtown Salt Lake City, just north of Pioneer Park. It is a hole in the wall, which is my favorite of all places. Only seating about three people on the inside, most people either get their food to-go or they sit outside. The menu is small, including only a few items: Belgian waffles, frites (fries), and a Machine Gun Sandwich. Who needs a big menu when those three items are unbelievably good?

Let me tell you how it works. Okay, you walk up to the register and you choose your waffle. You can choose either Cinnamon or Vanilla. If you are feeling daring, you can order the Torpedo; two waffles stacked on top of each other with chocolate in between. After choosing your waffle, you can choose between a bunch of different toppings: vanilla ice cream, cream fraiche (my personal favorite - it is comparable to thick whipped cream), chocolate, and a bunch of different fruits.

Once you are done with your waffle ordering, it is time to move on to the frites. Large or small? What sauce? They have made about ten different dipping sauces to choose from. I have no idea what is in any of them, but my personal favorite is the Andelouse sauce. It is their signature fry sauce and it is bomb.

The third and final item on their menu is something called a Machine Gun Sandwich. It is lamb sausage, topped with fries and Andelouse sauce, all in a soft baguette. I had never tried lamb before I ate it here. I know it sounds a little funky, but it is good.  Everyone should live a little and try it just once.  Every other time you can order the waffles like I do :)

Machine Gun Sandwich (Pretty Manly, Huh!)

This place would be the perfect place to take a date. It is cute and very unique. The waffles are unlike any waffle you have ever eaten in your life. The waffle may look plain, but whatever they put in the batter puts every other Belgian waffle to shame. I do have to warn you, though, the waffles are pretty small, so if you are starving, I would either order fries or two waffles.

Price Range: $6-$7 Per Waffle
(plain waffle is cheap, toppings are not)

Here is their website with their menu, prices, and location:

Summer Hours:
Monday through Thursday [9 a.m. to 8 p.m.]
Friday and Saturday [9 a.m. to 10 p.m.]
Sunday [Closed]

P.s. I would avoid going on Saturday morning during the Farmer's Market because it is always packed

Sunshine Cafe:North Salt Lake

Cinnamon Granola Pancake??

I have always had this dream of walking into the same mom and pop diner every morning, having the owner turn the corner and bring out the same meal I order day after day. I would ask her about her life and if anyone interesting came into the diner that day. After chatting for a while, she would ask me to try a new dish she invented and I would tell her it is delicious. While sipping hot chocolate with a giant whipped cream mustache, I would tell her to put it on my tab and that I would check in tomorrow to see if the pancakes are still good :). What would this diner be called? Sunshine Cafe. And where is it located? North Salt Lake.

The diner only seats about 30 people, but if you have to wait, it is worth it (although it is a little awkward standing to wait for  people to finish eating). Adorned with old diner signs, the cafe feels so small town and homey. How impressive is this... the woman who owns the place cooks everything herself. That is amazing! And she is fast! Our food came out in less than ten minutes.

All I have to say is you have to try the Cinnamon Granola Pancake. This pancake and the Apple Pancake from The Original Pancake House are the two best pancakes I have ever had. The granola is caramelized and warm and soft. ah its so good. Plus, it is only $2.75 for this large pancake. What a steal! It is actually probably a good thing I don't live in North Salt Lake anymore or you would be seeing my face in a plate full of cinnamon granola pancakes every single morning.

I took pictures of their menu for you :)

Oh and if you are wondering about the Apple Pancake at The Original Pancake House... Take a look...

This pancake is a mix of caramelized apples and cinnamon, with egg and pancake. It is absolutely giant. I always feel sick because I cannot stop eating it. By the time I am about to throw up, it doesn't even look like i made a dent.

It is unreal.

There are Original Pancake Houses all over the place, Salt Lake City, Denver, Boulder.

Here is where they are located in Salt Lake:

Jack's Wood Fired Pizza:Logan

Jack's = Best Pizza in Logan
Hands Down

Most of you are like me and have driven past Jack's Wood Fired Pizza everyday wondering if it was any good. Well, a few days ago, it finally got to me. Molli and I entered the small Main Street pizza parlor and could not have been happier. I felt like I found something that no one else had ever discovered. The place was small and quiet, with a hipster feel to it. It was simply decorated, with brick walls and one big fireplace in the back. The two men working were very friendly and laid back. We shared one small pizza and each got a side salad. It was the perfect amount of food. We were full, but not stuffed.

Here it is:
Chuckwagon Pizza {$11}
BBQ sauce, Savannah's Pulled Pork, pineapple, jalepenos, topped with parmesan cheese

With my favorite pizza topping being pineapple, and my second being anything BBQ, I was immediately excited about this pizza. However, both Molli and I were a little nervous about pork and jalepenos on our pizza, but we went for it anyways. We were not disappointed. The crust was thin, but not the crunchy cracker-style crust, it was thick enough to still be soft. The pork was juicy and the pineapple was cut into thin long strips, so I knew it was fresh and not canned. The jalepenos weren't too spicy and combined well with the fruit. The BBQ sauce didn't overpower the pizza the way Firehouse's does. The cheese didn't slide off with one bite.

It was Perfect

Here is the side salad I ordered:
Dressing: Huckleberry-Infused Poppyseed

When my salad was set in front of me, the first thing I thought was...aw man... I thought it was just another salad that they bought at Smith's from a bag, poured it into a bowl, stuck a tomato on it, and called it a fresh salad. Although this may have been the case, the dressing made this salad delicious. Even the name, Huckleberry-Infused Poppyseed, makes my mouth water. It was a sweet dressing, but not overpowering like Pizza Pie Cafe's Raspberry Vinaigrette, which is too much after about the fourth bite. I am glad I ordered the salad because I don't know if the pizza alone would have filled me up all the way. It wasn't the best salad I have ever had, but the dressing was awesome. So if you get a salad, I would suggest trying this huckleberry dressing at least once.

Jack's also has dessert pizzas. I have talked to a lot of people who have said they are so good. Just reading the description on the menu, I think they look amazing. There are also some lunch and dinner specials that would be worth checking out. Take a look at the menu below and see for yourself:
